Because every patient is unique, instructions may vary. Follow your doctor’s directions closely to ensure the best experience. Not following instructions or completing your preparation may delay or cancel your procedure.
The list below outlines general guidelines to help you prepare for an endoscopy or colonoscopy.
Before Your Procedure
- An Endoscopy Center nurse will call you ahead of time to review medications you should stop or continue. Ask about any over-the-counter medications or supplements during this call.
- Food and drink restrictions vary based on your procedure. Preparation for a colonoscopy differs from an upper endoscopy. Your nurse will provide specific instructions.
- Wear comfortable clothing that is easy to remove and put back on.
- Do not wear jewelry.
- If you wear glasses or contact lenses, bring a case for safekeeping during your procedure.
Preparing For Your Endoscopy
In preparation for your endoscopy, please DO NOT eat or drink anything after midnight the night prior to your procedure. If you have any questions, please call and ask to speak with a nurse. You will need to have someone drive you home following the procedure as you will be drowsy.
Important
- NO ASPIRIN or BLOOD THINNERS (Motrin, Coumadin, Plavix, Aggrenox, etc.) 5 days prior to the procedure.
- Do not take any medications the morning of your procedure unless they are for an irregular heartbeat, seizures, or breathing problems. If so, please take them with a small sip of water.
Morning of Your Procedure
- Bring a driver. This person must stay during your procedure and drive you home. Your procedure will be canceled if you do not have a driver.
- Bring your driver’s license, insurance cards, and any required payment. Plan to leave these with your driver during the procedure.
- Leave unnecessary valuables at home.
- Bring your medications or a list of medications, including dosages.
